At home
[Slugger opens his bedroom door, walks down to the kitchen, takes a seat at the breakfast table, and awaits his morning waffles and orange juice. Just like every morning.

Just like every morning...

He begins to breathe a little faster.]

At home; front steps
[The front steps are littered in pages and pages of notes. Surrounded by the papers, Slugger sits busily filling another page from front to back in quickly scrawled, progressively sloppy handwriting. Once finished he tears it out, throws it aside and begins to fill a new page. His hands tremble slightly.]

Night; fireworks display
[Here with family or possibly wandering alone, Slugger stares blankly into the sky holding his bat close. Every so often, he reaches beneath his ball cap for a folded piece of paper, reads it, and puts it back.]

Important things. Who I am, what's real.

[He decides his pocket isn't a good place to put the note---he might forget it there---so under his cap it goes. It occurs to him that, while he may not know Luke well enough yet to tell with certainty if he's droned or not, there's something... off about his voice. Yes, he doesn't remember Luke sounding so American.]

Are you sure? ...Do you think I'm really your brother?

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
[There's an actual moment of hesitation, and a quick flash of nervousness across Luke's face.]

O-of course I'm your brother! Always have been, what kind of question is that?

Are you sure you're feeling okay?

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
[For a fleeting moment he thinks the real Luke might surface, but it doesn't.]

But... how can we be brothers if I'm a monster?

[His own memories of Luke having always been his fraternal twin brother are becoming difficult to ignore.]

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
A monster? Slugger, are you sure you aren't watching too many of those horror movies? Mom says it's not good for you.

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Wh-- yes!

[Okay, he does love terrible horror movies, but that's not-- He is a monster! The note said so. By now they've reached the garage where a box of fireworks sets and almost instantly diverts Slugger's attention. Is that a bottle rocket? Yippee!]

I'll get the box if you get the matches.

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
[What young boy doesn't like to play fireworks? Luke sure doesn't know one.]

Right, got it!

[And he goes to fetch some matches. Hey, what's a July 4th without a bit of mischief and possibly some lost limbs?]

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[By the time Like gets back, Slugger will have dragged the box onto the driveway and will be at the edge of the front lawn with a piece of pipe. Once he's got it pushed part-way into the dirt, he'll stick a bottle rocket into the end of the pipe. It all seems to come very naturally.]

You want to light?

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-07 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Sure! Just let me get out a match here and...

[His voice tries off as he pulls out the box of matches, staring at them. For some reason he has a really, really strong urge to make a puzzle out of these matches. And the strangest part was that he could visual it perfectly.]

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-08 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Slugger watches him curiously, still kneeling in the grass.]

...What is it?

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-08 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
[He quickly snaps out of it.]

Ah, nothing! I just thought of a puzzle for some reason.

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-08 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
A puzzle? Was it one Dad showed you?

[You always were the brainier one.]

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-08 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, this is different from the ones he usually does...

[Did he really come up with an idea for puzzle like that? No, that can't be right. There was something oddly familiar about it.]

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
[Headtilt. He watches, waiting to see whether or not Luke will build the puzzle.]

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
[He sits down, pulling out the matches and rearranging them on the sidewalk.

By the time Luke's done, it looks like this puzzle (http://professorlaytonwalkthrough.blogspot.com/2008/02/puzzle009.html)]

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Slugger knows nothing about the puzzle but the shape is readily identifiable.]

It's a dog.

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey! You guessed right already!

...Have you seen this one before or was it that easy?

[identity profile] strike-you-out.livejournal.com 2011-07-13 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It has a tail and four legs.

...

Luke. Did we have a dog? --named Maromi?

[identity profile] tapshoetomove.livejournal.com 2011-07-14 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
A dog? Sure we did. I always did think that name you gave it was a little odd.
